Hernando County To Open Hurricane Shelter Tuesday Morning

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – Hernando County Emergency Management will open a hurricane shelter at Challenger K-8 (13400 Elgin Blvd, Spring Hill) on Tuesday, October 8th at 8:00 a.m. for residents needing a safe place to stay during Hurricane Milton.

The shelter will accommodate special needs clients, the general population, and pets.

Evacuation Recommendations

Residents living west of US 19, in coastal or low-lying areas, and in manufactured homes are strongly encouraged to evacuate. If possible, seek shelter with family or friends in a safe location.

Pet-Friendly Shelter Information

  • Transportation for pets to the special needs shelter can be arranged through Animal Control. Call the Hernando County Public Information Center (PIC) at 352-754-4083 to schedule a pick-up. The PIC is open Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 7 a.m., and 24/7 thereafter.
  • Bring your pet's crate, medications, food, leash, collar, and vaccination records.
  • Ensure your pet is comfortable and identifiable.
  • Be prepared to care for your pet in a designated area separate from the general population.
