CASCO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say an SUV crashed Friday afternoon in Casco Township, killing the driver and seriously injuring the passenger.

It happened around 5:35 p.m. on northbound I-196 near the 25 mile marker, according to the Allegan County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say an SUV lost control, went into the ditch and flipped several times.

The driver and passenger were both hurt and were taken to the hospital, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies say the driver died at the hospital, while the passenger was in stable but serious condition. No names were released Friday.

Investigators don't believe speed or alcohol were involved, but they say seat belts were not worn.

The freeway was temporarily closed after the crash but has since reopened.
