MELROSE, Fla. (WCJB) - A 2-year-old in Melrose was life-flighted to the hospital after a dog bit the child in the face on Tuesday.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the toddler played with the dog and pulled its ear.

When the dog growled, the child's mother took the toddler away from the animal.

The mother put the child down and when she looked away, the toddler returned to the dog. That's when the dog bit the child in the face.

Putnam County Rescue crews say the child's cheek was barely attached and the chin was also injured. The toddler was taken to UF Health Shands.

The dog's owner told investigators the animal had attacked other dogs in the past, but never a human.

As animal control took custody of the dog, the owners reportedly blamed the child for the attack.
