Early unofficial results show Measure P, tax on cannabis, passing
The first report from the Stanislaus County Elections Office, reporting only mail-in ballots, showed Measure P with 70% of the vote in support.
Measure P levies taxes on cannabis businesses in the unincorporated areas of Stanislaus County.
It will generate an estimated 1.7 million in additional taxes.
The new tax requires 4% of gross receipts on sales and distribution which will impact four retail businesses currently operating in unincorporated areas of the county.
For 10 local growers, they will now be taxed $8 per square foot of canopy for grown cannabis or 4%, whichever is the higher amount.
The new tax puts unincorporated businesses on the same playing field as those currently operating in Modesto proper. The current system charges a minimum fee quarterly to legal growers regardless of their income.
The funds generated will go to unrestricted general use which may include neighborhood safety and efforts to better enforce illegal growth.
