El Paso Election Projections Based On Early Voting Count
El Paso elections have historically been decided during the early voting period. The reason for this is that more than half of El Paso's voters tend to vote during the early voting period. This makes the early voting period the determining factor in most political contests in the city. Unless early voting numbers are too close, the likelihood of a candidate making up ground during Election Day is not likely. Because of this, El Paso News generally calls election results based on the early voting ballot count.
For the City of El Paso City Council, we are projecting the following races.
Mayoral ElectionIn the mayoral election we project a runoff election between Brian Kennedy and Renard Johnson.
District 1In the District 1 race, we project a runoff between Alejandra Chávez and Monica Reyes.
District 2For the District 2 race, incumbent Josh Acevedo keeps his seat.
District 3The District 3 seat is too close to make a projection. Jose Rodriguez leads his two closest contenders, Kenneth Bell and Deanna Maldonado-Rocha. This seat will also go to a runoff.
District 4The District 4 incumbent Joe Molinar will face Cynthia Boyer Trejo in a runoff election.
District 5Based on the early voting results, we predict a runoff election between Amanda Cunningham against Ivan Niño.
District 7The District 7 seat is too close to call. Lily Limón will face off against either Chris Hernandez or Fabiola Campos Lopez.
It is important to note that today's ballot tabulations are ongoing and that the final results will change. However, in the races we have called, we do not believe that today's ballots will have enough of an impact to change the results. The official results will not be released until the Elections Department has finished their canvass.
