ELECTION 2024: Updated results in national, state and local races
Nov. 5—The Commercial-News is following a number of races tonight from the battle for President between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump to local races including the 104th Representative District between Jarrett Clem and Brandun Schweizer and the 52nd State Senate District between Paul Faraci and Jeff Brownfield.
As of midnight Tuesday, there was no official word on the winner between Harris and Trump in the race for the President.
According to the Associated Press, Trump has won the battleground state of Georgia, the onetime Republican stronghold that had voted for Democrats four years ago. Along with his win in North Carolina, Trump has narrowed Kamala Harris' pathways to victory and expanded his routes to reaching the 270 electoral votes needed to become the next president. The victory left Harris heavily reliant on the "blue wall" of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to have a credible path to the White House.
Additionally, because of issues in Champaign County, no winner could be officially declared in either the 52nd State Senate District or the 104th Representative District.
With just under 80 percent of the votes counted, Faraci had a substantial lead over Brownfield (42,150-26,200) while Schweizer narrowly led Clem (20,213-18,902).
In Illinois, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly claimed victory in the Second Congressional District over Ashley Ramos. Kelly has been a member of Congress since 2013.
Unofficial winners for Vermilion County Board Districts are Todd Johnson (First District), Steve Miller and Daniel Wright (Second District), Jon Eakle (Third District), Timothy McFadden and Gary H. Wright (Fourth District), Crisi Walls (Fifth District), Mark Steinbaugh and Lon Henderson (Sixth District), Craig A. Golden (Seventh District, 4-year term), Timothy Morgan (Seventh District, 2-year unexpired term) along with Jerry Hawker and Bryan J. McDaniels (Eighth District).
The proposition for an addition to the existing fire station in Westville passed by more than 1,800 votes.
In Indiana, U.S. Rep. Jim Banks, Republican, soared to victory to become Indiana's newest U.S. Senator over Valerie McCray, Democrat, and Libertarian Andrew Horning.
Also in Indiana, Republican Mike Braun was elected as Indiana's governor, easily defeating Democrat Jennifer McCormick.
