Emergency safety work begins on Coe Pond Dam in Ansonia

ANSONIA, Conn. (WTNH) — Emergency safety work was set to begin at the Coe Pond Dam Monday, according to the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments (NVCOG).

Officials said the construction will last about two weeks as crews focus on enlarging a notch in a concrete spillway, which will lower the water level in Coe Pond by about three feet.

Worsening floods and deterioration pose threats to US dam safety

The work was deemed necessary after an engineering report in March determined the dam is in poor condition and if problems were not addressed, posed an immediate threat to public safety, "with the potential for loss of human life and property damage," according to NVCOG.

Coe Pond Dam is part of the Kinneytown Dam Hydroelectric Facility, a federally-regulated facility currently owned by Kinneytown Hydro Inc.

NVCOG said they are working to acquire the non-operational dam facility with hopes of ultimately removing the dam to restore the river to its natural course and ecosystem.

More information on the project can be found on the NVCOG website.
