LITTLETON, Colo. ( KDVR ) — A private funeral service for Golden Police officer Evan Dunn was held Wednesday afternoon at Mission Hills Church in Littleton.

Dunn, 33, was killed while responding to a suspected DUI crash in Golden last week. He was a new officer and was actively serving as a captain.

Before the service began, hundreds of first responders and police officers participated in a procession described as a "Blue Tunnel."

A long procession of patrol cars from agencies across Colorado and other states made their way through law enforcement vehicles lined up on the street that led to the church.

Firefighters used ladder trucks to hang a giant American flag under which the procession passed. An Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter escorted Dunn's body from the air.

Many people stood along the sidewalks of the street leading up to the Mission Hills Church.

Andrea Lynch of Evergreen has a son who is an officer. She stood along the funeral route with a message for Dunn's family.

"Know that I'm thinking of you and all of your family and also to his wife," Lynch told FOX31.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife trainees were along the funeral route too saying Dunn's death hit home.

"It hits especially hard, thinking, being so fresh in our careers. Most of us here are very new. So it hurts," CPW Park Ranger trainee Kaeti Lehnus said.

Kenzie Kimmel of Johnstown brought her children. She told FOX31 her brother was an officer killed in the line of duty.

"I just know how much it means to the family to have their loved one honored and so we just wanted to make sure to come down and do that for another family," Kimmel said.

Madison fought back tears saying she had to be here.

"Because it hits home. You know I get to kiss my officer goodbye every single night. But we don't know if they are going to come home and a terrible thing happen. So, I feel really bad for the family having to go through this," Madison said.

A spokesperson for the Colorado Fallen Heroes Foundation said Wednesday that while the funeral services were private, the City of Golden may release video of portions of the service to the public in the coming days.
