Famed Restaurant ShangHai Taste Now Open In Plano, Texas

ShangHai Taste , a Chinatown staple known for the xiao long bao, recently expanded from Las Vegas to Plano, Texas. The restaurant officially opened in October 2024 and is serving up traditional Chinese steamed buns seven days a week.

Founded in 2019 in Las Vegas' Chinatown, the original restaurant location, led by 2023 James Beard Award semifinalist Jimmy Li, quickly gained popularity for its acclaimed xiao long bao, becoming an instant favorite.

The Texas menu will closely reflect the offerings at the Chinatown location, highlighting both traditional and modern xiao long bao. These signature dumplings will be complemented by appetizers like sheng jian bao, scallion chicken salad, along with a selection of soups, noodle dishes and various fried rice options featuring egg, Chinese sausage or other proteins.

As Local Profile previously reported , the Plano employees trained in Las Vegas under Li's guidance before opening the newest location. Li spent a month in Plano before the opening and will continue to visit quarterly as the restaurant establishes itself.

Expansion beyond Chinatown was motivated by limited seating — only 38 seats and an even smaller kitchen. Li also wanted to ensure diners could enjoy dumplings hot and fresh from the steamer. The Plano dining area will seat approximately 50 guests, a one-third increase from Chinatown. The kitchen, however, will be significantly larger to support increased dumpling production.
