BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A dog was rescued from a house fire in Battle Creek early Sunday morning, firefighters said.

Just before 5 a.m. Sunday, the Battle Creek Fire Department got a call for a house fire on Grand Boulevard near Grandview Court. Arriving firefighters found the homeowner outside, who said the fire was in a second-floor bedroom and his dog was still inside.

A rescue team went into the home to search and was able to get the dog out. No one was injured, firefighters say.

Other fire engine crews worked to battle the fire and ventilate. Eventually, they were able to get the fire under control and keep it upstairs.

The fire was caused by unattended candles left burning, according to the fire department.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Sunday that he has no plan to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin as he pledged support for Ukraine as the U.K.'s top priority at this week's G20 summit. Speaking with reporters on the way to the meeting in Brazil, Starmer said he wouldn't speak to Putin as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz did on Friday. The call between the two leaders, which the Kremlin said was initiated by Germany, was the first publicly announced conversation between Putin and a major head of a Western power in almost two years.
