SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - Firefighters with Thomas Township Public Safety put out a small fire at Swan Valley High School Thursday night, Oct. 17.

According to Thomas Township Public Safety, firefighters responded to the high school due to a fire alarm.

Upon arrival to the school, firefighters were met by school staff who said they had a small fire involving staining rags - which were removed - and smoke was in the shop area, Thomas Township Public Safety said. Firefighters put out the small can fire and ventilated the building.

Thomas Township Public Safety said the school didn't sustain any damage, and its crews were on scene for about two hours to clear out the smoke.

"The school staff did exactly what they should have and the fire alarm activated as it should," Thomas Township Public Safety said. "Good job to the Swan Valley custodian staff for their quick actions as well as our own firefighters for their dedication to helping serve our community."

Thomas Township Public Safety said this incident serves as a reminder there are hazards associated with staining rags.
