FLORENCE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — A busy intersection turned into a deadly scene Sunday morning, where one man was hit and killed while crossing the street.

The Public Information Officer for the Florence Police Department, Joshua Meza, told News 19 how the incident unfolded.

"The caller was an off-duty dispatcher who called and that was the first person that called us about it and she witnessed it as well," Meza said.

The dispatcher told police she saw the man crossing the street when he didn't have the right away.

"At the time the pedestrian was crossing [was] when the driver had the green light," Meza said.

Meza told News 19 the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver stayed on the scene, I don't think he was the first caller, you know your nerves are shaken when something like that happens," Meza said.

This is the seventh pedestrian that has been hit by a vehicle in the Shoals in just a span of a few months. FPD shared a message for drivers and pedestrians.

"A lot of that is just both drivers and pedestrians need to pay closer attention to what's going on in their surroundings and that would definitely help with getting those numbers down," Meza said.

The Lauderdale County Coroner's office identified the person killed as 55-year-old Ronnie Dell Weakley of Florence. The driver of the vehicle has not been charged and Florence Police said they are still investigating.
