Forecast: Storms tonight, rain Sunday

It's been another hot September day, and likely the last one for a while. Temperatures have been roughly the same as Friday's.

We've now had 133 consecutive days with highs of at least 70 degrees in Des Moines (thanks to the National Weather Service office in Johnston for the graphic below).

Things change as a cold front drops through the state tonight and brings showers and thunderstorms along with it. Expect a much cooler Sunday.

The images below show the progression of storms and showers across Iowa tonight through Sunday afternoon, along with the general rainfall amounts expected.

We move into astronomical fall on Sunday morning, with high temperatures responding accordingly as the sun's most direct rays cross the equator southbound.

As we look at the extended outlook, it appears we'll stick with above-average highs and below-average precipitation into the beginning of next month.
