FORECAST:

A mild start to the workweek, but it will end with some big-time chill.

Highs warm to the lower 70s this afternoon under a partly cloudy sky.

Rain chances return tomorrow through early Wednesday, but no big rain is expected.

Temps remain near 70 degrees through Wednesday before a big blast of cold returns on Thursday (the longest stretch of chill so far this season.) Highs may not get out of the lower 50s by Friday with some frost likely by Friday morning.

Mountain snow is also likely starting on Thursday with the highest elevations seeing some accumulation.

A powerful winter storm is set to blast portions of the U.S. with accumulating snow, cold temperatures, strong winds and rain just as millions of people across the country prepare to travel early for Thanksgiving.

If this cold front has you hoping for an OKC-covered snow, have patience. It could be weeks, if it happens at all this year, forecasters say.

Floodwaters hit hundreds of houses in the northern Philippines on Monday after water released from a dam following Typhoon Man-yi caused a major river to break its banks.As people cleaned up on Monday, floods began hitting communities in the north after water from Magat Dam was released, causing the Cagayan river and some tributaries to overflow.

Today's top weather news for Monday, Nov. 18 2024: Powerful storms are expected to impact travel across the U.S. ahead of Thanksgiving travel and the remnants of Sara will bring rain to the Gulf Coast.

As the third named storm to emerge during November, Tropical Storm Sara serves as a reminder that the Atlantic hurricane season hasn't quite ended. Sara formed in the western Caribbean Sea before making landfall Thursday on the northern coast of Honduras, dumping torrential rains in a slow weekend crawl across parts of Central America. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm could dump up to 40 inches (101.6 centimeters) of rain in some areas and is expected to move over Belize Sunday before dissipating over the Yucatan Peninsula early Monday.

Weather forecasters have issued a wind advisory effective today for an area that includes Topeka. Hail and tornadoes will be possible, they say.
