CHICAGO — The Foster Avenue bridge over the Kennedy Expressway is slated to be replaced with closures beginning next month.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Thursday that the project is scheduled to begin on Wednesday Nov. 6, weather permitting.

The bridge will be closed and a detour will direct drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists to Nagel, Bryn Mawr, Milwaukee and Central avenues.

The Foster Avenue ramps to and from the Kennedy will remain open during the first phase of construction. Then, the westbound Foster Avenue ramp to outbound Kennedy will be closed for approximately three to four months in early spring, according to IDOT.

Various overnight lane closures on the Kennedy at Foster Avenue will also be scheduled throughout construction.

The project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026.

IDOT said the $25.2 million project will also involve installing new LED lighting and traffic signals, as well as new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and implementing drainage improvements.
