Freeway closures: What to know before hitting metro Phoenix roads this weekend

C.Chen39 min ago

Closures and lane restrictions along sections of Phoenix-area freeways are scheduled for this weekend, Oct. 18-21.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, improvement projects will require closures of Interstate 10, Interstate 17 and Loop 101.

ADOT encourages drivers to allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes.

I-10 and U.S. 60

Freeway closures 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday

I-10 westbound will be closed for construction between U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway) and the I-17 "Split" interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Ramp closures beginning 8 p.m. Friday

I-10 westbound on-ramps at Elliot and Baseline roads also will close.

The U.S. 60 westbound on-ramps at McClintock Drive, Rural Road and Mill Avenue will close.

ADOT suggests drivers use Loop 202 eastbound (Santan Freeway) or U.S. 60 eastbound to Loop 101 (Price Freeway) northbound before using Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) westbound in Tempe to reach Sky Harbor or the downtown Phoenix area.

To avoid the closure and reach the I-10 in the West Valley, drivers can consider using the westbound and northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway).

Additional closures 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday

Broadway Road will be closed between 48th and 55th streets (over the I-10).

I-17

Southbound closures 9p.m. Friday - 2p.m. Saturday

The I-17 southbound will close between Peoria Avenue and Seventh Avenue for pavement sealing.

The I-10 ramps to the I-17 southbound at the "Stack" interchange (south of McDowell Road) will close.

ADOT notes these schedules are subject to change due to inclement weather.

Northbound closures 9 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday

The I-17 northbound will close between the I-10 "Split" interchange (near Sky Harbor Airport) and Peoria Avenue for pavement sealing.

The I-10 ramps to the I-17 northbound at the "Stack" interchange will close.

I-17 restrictions and closures in north Phoenix

During mostly overnight hours, the I-17 southbound will be narrowed to one lane between State Route 74/Carefree Highway and Loop 303 for pavement improvements. Those lane restrictions will be in effect from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday, and 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The I-17 southbound on-ramps at S.R. 74 and off-ramp at Dove Valley Road will be closed Friday and Saturday nights.

The I-17 southbound off and on-ramps at Loop 303 will be closed on Sunday night.

The I-17 northbound will be narrowed to one lane overnight between Happy Valley Road and Loop 303 (9p.m. - 5a.m.) Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Remember to allow extra travel time. Consider traveling when restrictions are not scheduled.

Avoid using neighborhood streets east of the I-17 that are not designed for freeway traffic.

Loop 101

Northbound closures 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday

Loop 101 northbound (Pima Freeway) will be closed between Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Pima Road/Princess Drive for bridge work.

The Loop 101 northbound on-ramps at Cactus Road and Raintree Drive will also close.

ADOT says traffic will detour along the Loop 101 northbound frontage road and re-enter the freeway at Pima Road.

Eastbound closures 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday

Loop 101 eastbound (Agua Fria Freeway) will close between 51st and 19th Avenues for work zone setup and asphalt pavement removal.

The Loop 101 eastbound on-ramps at 75th, 67th and 59th Avenues will also close.

Consider exiting ahead of the closure and use eastbound Union Hills Drive or Bell Road.

Freeway traffic exiting at 51st Avenue will use the frontage road.

ADOT recommends allowing extra travel to accommodate for delays.
