Georgia State rep. celebrates milestone birthday

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)—Family, friends and community leaders gathered in Savannah to celebrate the 80th birthday of a local legend, Edna Jackson.

Jackson has been a pillar of the savannah community for decades, serving as a civil rights leader, educator and public official, including her historic tenure as the city's first African American woman mayor.

The celebration took place at Collins Quarter in Forsyth Park and benefited 'The Edna Jackson Student Scholarship Fund at Savannah State University. Ninety percent of students at Savannah State are in need of financial support.

Development for former fairgrounds property pushes forward

"To think that the people here in the city of Savannah came out to celebrate my birthday," Jackson said. "I'm just so excited. I just want to thank them. As you know, this... my birthday will benefit Savannah State University, and which is most important because our students need help."

A fitting tribute for a woman who has given so much to her community.

As Edna Jackson turns 80, it's clear that her legacy of service will continue to shape Savannah for years to come.
