MERCER — In honor of the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, the Mercer County Historical Society is hosting a special presentation on Saturday, "A Dedication to Sacrifice" with local author and historian Douglas Veverka. Veverka will take attendees back to the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg, when people from all over, including many from Mercer County, traveled to witness the devastating scenes left behind on the battlefield. Drawing on Gregory Coco's "A Strange and Blighted Land," Veverka will share vivid insights into the somber realities these visitors encountered. He will also explore the similarities between the layout of Mercer and Gettysburg, bringing a map to illustrate these fascinating connections. He will also explore the enduring power of the Gettysburg Address, examining how Lincoln's concise yet profound words resonated across the nation. Veverka will also have copies of his book, "All Gave Some: An American Narrative," available for sale, with a chance to get them signed. The book pays tribute to his family's American experience through their journey of service, resilience, and sacrifice.
