One year ago, a group of teens allegedly beat a 64-year-old man to death in Washington, D.C. During testimony this Tuesday, the teen who proposed the plan said they did it because they were "bored."

That's according to a report from WUSA9 . It said the trial was for two others girls who participated in the crime.

In press release issued this July, the Metropolitan Police Department explained that 64-year-old Reggie Brown was discovered with trauma consistent with assault on the 6200 block of Georgia Avenue on Oct. 17 of last year. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined via an autopsy that Brown's cause of death of death was blunt force trauma and that the manner of death homicide.

Last month, D.C. Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Sasha Breland testified that Brown died of blunt force trauma to his head that caused bleeding in his brain, WUSA9 reported.

A 13-year-old girl was arrested March 28 and charged with second degree murder in relation to the crime, police said. Another 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl were also arrested and charged with second degree murder the following day. Then, on July 18, two other teens were arrested – another 13-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl. They were also charged with second degree murder.

"Two of the teens have pleaded guilty, including the oldest, a 15-year-old who was sentenced last week to three years in prison for assault with a dangerous weapon," WUSA9 reported.

She was the witness who said the brutal attack was carried out due to "boredom," per the outlet, which was granted permission to cover the proceeded on the condition that it not identify the juveniles. Prosecutors from the D.C. Office of the Attorney General (OAG) called the 15-year-old to give testimony.

According to the witness, she and other girls were at a skate park in Silver Spring, Md., when they decided to "find someone to beat up" before going home to D.C. Prosecutor Gabrielle Logaglio asked the teen why.

"Because we were bored," the girl said.

With this plan in mind, the girls allegedly headed to the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Sheridan Street in D.C.'s Brightwood neighborhood. It was there they saw an unknown adult male already attacking Brown and he was laying on the ground. At this point, it was around 11 p.m.

Per the 15-year-old's testimony, the group asked the man if they could beat Brown up as well. He said they could and they all began chasing Brown together – he began to flee as the man took time to speak to the teens.

"Surveillance video shows the teens and the unknown man chasing Brown through an alley until they finally caught up with him," WUSA9 reported.

One of the girls (identified by WUSA9 as the 15-year-old's sister) used her cellphone to record the group taunting, beating and kicking the 64-year-old. Members of Brown's family stepped into the hallway while the video played during the trial.

"Damn, you leakin," one girl could be heard saying in the video, apparently mocking the man for bleeding.

Logaglio asked the 15-year-old what she was thinking as the group walked away from Brown's body.

"He's dead," the girl said. She is currently in custody at the Youth Services Center and was expected to re-take the stand on Thursday for cross-examination by defense counsel, WUSA9 said. Additionally, attorneys for the girl who was 12-year-old at the time of her arrest have argued she was misidentified by other members of group.

WUSA explained that, under D.C. law, the juvenile defendants could face a maximum sentence of imprisonment until age 21 and that there are no jury trials for juvenile defendants. Therefore, the verdict in this case is expected to be decided by D.C. Superior Court Judge Kendra Briggs, who is presiding over the trial.
