Glendale mother critically hurt after car plows into her living room

GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A Glendale mother is fighting for her life in the hospital after police say a suspected impaired driver crashed into her family's home Sunday night.

It happened near 67th Avenue and Beardsley Road, and no one has been arrested yet.

Police say an adult woman was driving the car with two other passengers. Information about the driver and passengers has not been released.

Some neighbors had tears in their eyes when they told Arizona's Family about how special this wife and mother is.

"She's just a great mom. Very friendly. Wonderful neighbors. Very sweet family," said neighbor Jenny Frank.

Glendale Police say the victim is in the hospital in critical condition after she was pinned under the car that plowed into her living room.

"It was unbelievable. I mean, it's really inconceivable because to have an accident in that nature, first of all, you would you would never feel that unsafe in your own home, and you should never feel that unsafe in your own home," said neighbor Erica Cohen.

Cohen and other neighbors say they heard the victim was putting up the Christmas tree when the incident happened.

They say the victim's husband and two young kids were in another part of the house at the time.

"Just to think that something like this could happen when you're sitting in your own home where you're supposed to be safe is just shocking," said Frank.

"It's really sad to think that something like this could have happened to her. Very caring person. Cares about her family, and she's always outside talking to people, waving at people. It's really sad to see, genuinely," said Cohen.

Detectives believe speed and impairment were factors in this wreck.

"For an accident like that to happen, you would actually have to intentionally turn down the street and speed up to gun into their house. So, the nature of it is very intentional, and that feels very violating," said Cohen.

"If you look at where that house, their house was located it's at the top of a T-intersection so if the driver was impaired and going really quickly which is what it sounds like, then it's just a straight shot down 65th Avenue with nothing to stop them or slow them down," said Frank.

As the investigation continues, neighbors are holding on to hope that the young mother recovers.

"I really hope to hear good news soon. From what I hear things are still quite scary, so I'm really wishing her the best," said Cohen.

Neighbors also said they hope this leads to change. They say cars have rammed into brick walls by homes in this neighborhood in the past, but they've never seen anything this severe.

Now, some are calling for safety improvements like speed bumps to prevent future crashes.
