TUPELO – Governor Tate Reeves didn't take long to name a replacement for John Weddle, who he appointed to the Court of Appeals Wednesday.

Friday morning, Reeves named Jason D. Herring of Saltillo as the interim District Attorney for the First Circuit Court District, which covers Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss and Tishomingo Counties.

"Jason will do an exceptional job as District Attorney," Reeves said. "I'll continue to appoint District Attorneys who will uphold public safety and be tough on crime. Jason will be one of those District Attorneys. I thank him for stepping up to fill this important role."

Herring will begin his new job on Oct. 14. In announcing Herring's appointment, Reeves did not say when a special election will be held to fill the remainder of Weddle's term, which runs through December 2027.

Herring has been a practicing attorney since 1998, earning both his bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Mississippi. He previously served as the city attorney for both Saltillo (2004-2012) and Guntown (2009-2012). Herring's primary focus in private practice was litigation, having tried hundreds of cases in the state trial courts.
