Grand Island Central Catholic doubles teams finish strong at state tennis

LINCOLN – After suffering losses in their quarterfinal matches at the state tennis tournament on Thursday, the Grand Island Central Catholic's doubles team finished strong.

Both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams each finished their season with wins Friday at the Woods Tennis Center.

Those efforts allowed the Crusaders to finish ninth with 17.125 points. Elkhorn Mt. Michael won three of the four divisions to capture its fourth state title in 10 years with 58 points, while Elkhorn North was second with 41.125.

At No. 1 doubles, Kyle Kelly and Alex Menagh went 2-0 in their consolation matches to finish fifth. The Crusader duo, who were the No. 9 seed, opened with an 8-5 win over Waverly's Isaac Clarke and Chase McInteer, who were the No. 4 seed. Kelly and Menagh finished the day by defeating Scottsbluff's Matthew Hafner and Joseph Escamilla Venzor 8-5 in the fifth-place match.

At No. 2 doubles, Max Friesen and Henry Schrad went 1-1 to finish seventh. The GICC duo, who were the No. 8 seed, opened with a 8-5 loss to Lincoln Christian's CJ Cuciti and Caleb DeWitt. The two ended their day with an 8-4 win over Lincoln Pius X's Dax Woita and Hudson Heiser in the seventh-place match.
