growing school district in Texas, report finds – Houston Public Media
The fastest-growing school district in Texas is located in Fort Bend County.
A recent demographics report found that Lamar CISD is the state's fastest-growing district and could grow by more than 20% over the next five years.
That's according to a report from Zonda Education, a data and analytics firm.
Bob Templeton is the school district segment vice president at Zonda Education, a data analytics firm that prepared the demographics report for Lamar CISD.
He presented the findings to the school board last month. As of October, the district had more than 46,000 students enrolled.
"That number is literally changing every day," he said. "It's growing as you have new families moving in all year long."
New elementary school students are driving the growth, according to the report's findings.
New homes are also continuing to pop up around the school district, with construction starting on more than 5,000 new houses a year.
"Over the next five years, we've got your enrollment reaching 56,781," he said. "You're basically continuing to grow almost 2,000 kids a year for the foreseeable future."
The district includes parts of Fulshear, Richmond and Rosenberg, among other areas of the county.
District leaders did note that legislative actions expanding "school choice" options could impact the growth, with more students opting out of public schools.
In a statement, Lamar CISD Superintendent Roosevelt Nivens expressed his excitement about the district's growth.
"As we experience unprecedented growth across Lamar CISD, it's clear that our commitment to quality education must grow with it," he said. "Our mission remains to ensure every student has the support, resources, and inspired leadership they need to thrive.
"We're excited about the future and dedicated to building a team that can keep pace with our community's rapid expansion and deliver excellence at every level."
