VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The President of Binghamton University has announced that this will be his final academic year with the college.

During Friday's Council meeting, Stenger announced that he is stepping down from his position after this year. According to Stenger, he has asked SUNY Chancellor John King to begin the search for Binghamton's next president and will remain president of the university until the search is completed.

Binghamton University credits Stenger with leading an era of growth and expansion that has established the University's reputation as one of the top public institutions in the nation. They credit this to the significant growth within its student population, number of faculty and staff, research expenditures, academic programs, student success, inclusion, sustainability, fundraising, campus renovation and construction.

During Stenger's tenure, overall student enrollment increased from 14,746 to 18,850, an increase of 28%. Graduate enrollment increased 44%, from 2,885 to 4,140. Since 2012, the number of full-time faculty is up 53% to 921. Professional and classified staff have grown by 28% to 2,865.

Stenger, who has served as president of BU for the past 13 years, says this was a difficult decision to make as he will miss working with the wonderful BU staff, faculty, students, community members, and alumni. He says his decision to leave was due to wanting to spend more time with his family and explore other opportunities with them.

Stenger promises to work tirelessly to address the university's issues at hand until his departure.
