Heavy rains drench St. Louis on Election Day, flooding some roads
Intense rainfall closed roads early Tuesday, stranded motorists and drenched voters standing in long line on Election Day across St. Louis.
By 6 a.m., some of the flooding issues around the metro area included cars stranded along Skinker Boulevard; McKnight and Litzsinger roads closed because of flooding from Deer Creek with vehicles stalled.
Police reported multiple motorists were rescued after driving into floodwaters in the House Springs area of Jefferson County.
Metro said flooding on Brentwood Boulevard prevented many of its buses from leaving the bus facility there. That meant no bus service for a dozen routes.
Brentwood schools closed due to a power outage and flooding nearby. Potosi schools closed too because of flooding.
At St. Louis Lambert International Airport, the National Weather Service said 3.25 inches of rain had fallen between midnight and 6 a.m. Rains should move out of the St. Louis area by the afternoon.
Late Monday night, the National Weather Service suspected a tornado downed telephone poles, a machine shed and several trees along Highway W near Foristell. The weather service said a survey crew was going out later in the day Tuesday to study the damage to confirm if it was indeed a tornado.
No one was injured.
