Teams are listed in predicted order of finish:
The toughest division has six legitimate contenders for the title.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Chris Scharff
Goals for/against: 48/23
Home field: High school
Players to watch: Seniors – Rachel Schaub, FB; Megan Youells, FB; Juniors – Kayla Caruso, F; Tara Dombzalski, F;Lynsey Ellis, FB: Sammi Elston, MF: Kelci Gibbons, MF: Michelle Gibbons, MF; Melissa Gorski, F; Alyssa Pyros, FB; Jill Spring, K; Kiley Williams, MF; Sophomore – Stephanie Ashley, FB.
Outlook: The D2 champion Mountaineers return nine starters – including Division A all-stars Pyros and Williams (14 g, 2 a). Gorski (11 g, 1 a) is one of the WVC’s top scorers and Spring is among the top keepers, making a repeat title as strong possibility.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Glenn Gray
Goals for/against: 51/11
Home field: Eddie White Field
Players to watch: Seniors – Allie Downing, FB; Sarah Rogers, Swp.; Kim Suchoski, F; Caryinna Yenchak, F; Juniors – Natalie Adams, MF; Stephanie Harkins, K; Mary Kate Lambert, MF; Maggie McCormick, MF; Alyssa Urbanski, Stp.; Sophomore – Emily Jones, MF: Amanda Pawlowski, Laura Wingert, MF; Alyssa Mocion, FB; Monica Wignot, F/MF.
Outlook: Division A scoring champ Yenchak (17 g, 10 a) and Suchoski (14 g, 8 a) give the Argents as potent a front line as any in the WVC. All-stater Rogers returns to anchor a defense that is also experienced. Hoban has the talent to win the divisional and D2 2A titles.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Joe Spagnuolo
Goals for/against: 40/9
Home field: Solomon/Plains Memorial
Players to watch: Seniors – Lora Chronowski, FB; Alyssa Kosmuch, MF; Taylor Popple, FB; Randi Segear, MF/F; Danielle Sickovitch, FB; Lauren Susek, FB; Alyssa Walsh, FB; Leighanne Tomko, MF; Juniors – Danielle Johnson, K; Mary Potorski, FB; Brittany Sipple, F; Adriana Serpico, FB; Sophomores – Jillian Cruz, K; Lindsay Dunsmuir, F; Sara Walton, FB.
Outlook: All-stater and Division A MVP Segear (16 g, 8 a) and all-star Walsh lead the Crusaders, who have good depth as usual and will utilize many players. Coughlin is a notorious slow starter, but always finishes strongly and could win both the Division A and D2 2A championships.
State classification: 3A
Coach: Chris Davis
Goals for/against: 35/22
Home field: Clarks Summit Elem.
Players to watch: Seniors – Megan Callahan, FB; Kate Risse, MF; Holly Woodley, K; Juniors – Libby Brundage, MF; Jessica Fox, F; Lori Matthews, FB; Sophomores – Melanie Beatty, Swp; Julie Hubbard, MF.
Outlook: The Comets lost some heartbreakers last season mainly because of a lack of depth. They are deeper this season with all-stater Hubbard and all-star Woodley heading a strong group of returning players. Still, catching the top-three teams will be difficult.
State classification: 3A
Coach: Bill McClaflin
Goals for/against: 80/7
Home field: 10th and Johnson Sts. by high school
Players to watch: Seniors – Tarra Combs, MF; Kim Gerlach, MF.; Amber Kiliti, Stp; Katie Mangan, MF; Sierra Matash, F; Carli McClafin, FB; Ilsa Wilczynski, F; Junior – Brooke Orlando, F; Sophomores – Tricia Gunderson, MF/F; Kristen Kemmerer, FB; Haley McClafin, Stp.; Caitlyn Michaels, Swp/MF; Megan Weaver, FB; Freshmen – Ashley DiPippa, MF: Lauren Kemmerer, FB.
Outlook: Matash (23 g, 7 a) and Orlando (20 g, 9 a) were dominant in Division B, but they and the rest of the Dawgs will be tested every game in Division A. There is plenty of talent on the roster to make a run at the title, but Berwick must fill a hole at the goalkeeper position in order to contend.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Rich Compton
Goals for/against: 57/13
Home field: Football stadium
Players to watch: Seniors – Amanda Blank, FB; Jess Bono, MF; Kelly Kuzlinski, MF; Amanda Shuelski, Maria Snyder, FB; Juniors – Brianna Borowski, MF: Kaitlyn Bowalick, MF; Kerry Hall, FB; Shannon Lushefski, K; Amanda Madejewski, F; Sophomores – Gabby Malishchak, FB.
Outlook: Although Nanticoke has been successful the past two seasons in Division B and has some solid returning players, making a run at the division title doesn’t appear likely. The Trojanettes lost 72 percent of their scoring and have a few holes elsewhere that will make breaking into the top half of the division difficult.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Pasquale Calabrese
Goals for/against: 32/35
Home field: Football stadium
Players to watch: Seniors – Cassie DiSabatino, Swp; Jenna DiSabatino, F; Maria Mahalak, MF; Cindy Mirra, MF/F; Megan Sharp, FB.
Outlook: The Comets lost seven starters from last year’s playoff team, so they face an uphill battle to get back to the postseason. Jenna DiSabatino (13 g, 2 a) was an all-star last season and the team’s leading scorer. The Comets, though, consist of mostly freshmen and sophomores, but should improve as the season goes on.
State classification: 2A
Goals for/against: 20/51
Home field: Football stadium
Co-Coaches: Kelly Spencer
Players to watch: Seniors – Caroline Boris, Swp; Kelsey Cole, F; Emily Deubler, FB; Aime Sgarlet, FB; Lauren Spencer, MF; Erin Sutliff, FB; Juniors – Kelly Bronson, MF; Freshmen – Erica Johnson, MF/F; Gaby Olshemski, F.
Outlook: The Black Knights went from 11-3 in 2005 to 3-11, but with only two players lost to graduation they expect to improve substantially. Leading scorer Cole (9 g, 3 a) returns as part of a solid senior group. The division, though, is tougher than last season, making a trip to the postseason unlikely.
The hardest division to predict since there isn’t any standout or weakling among the eight teams.
State classification: 3A
Coach: Mike Soskil
Goals for/against: 38/10
Home field: North primary school
Players to watch:
Seniors – Joan French, K; Kelsi Horan, MF; Stephanie Pappas, FB; Juniors – Sara Olson, Jr.; Brianna Zeiler, MF; Sophomore – Jill Jansco, MF.
Outlook: The Buckhorns believe they can win the division, but they also know they can finish in the lower half as well. Horan (21 g, 4 a) was second in Division C in scoring, and she and French were first-team all-stars. The duo will be the key to success.
Wyoming Seminary
State classification: 2A
Coach: Seth Gardiner
Goals for/against: 27/67
Home field: Payne-Pettibone, Wyoming
Players to watch: Seniors – Jackie Thomas, FB; Juniors – Orsolya Csaba, MF; Najia Hasan, F; Sophomores – Devin Gagliardi, MF: Kelsey Kolojejchick, MF.
Outlook: Although stronger than the past two seasons, the Blue Knights still had to slide down a division. They should do well, as a solid group led by all-star Hasan and leading scorer Gagliardi (9 g , 2 a) returns. The addition of Csaba, a member of the Hungarian national team, will also help out.
State classification: 3A
Coach: Mike Davitt
Goals for/against: 24/79
Home field: Luz. Co. Rec Complex
Players to watch:
Seniors – Kim Kulick, F; Kristen Pechulis, MF; Junior – Katelyn Lawton, MF; Sophomores — Lauren Ganter, FB; Amanda Harris, F; Rebecca Lipski, F.
Outlook: The Spartans are young, with over half the varsity roster consisting of sophomores and freshmen. However, the team is more talented than last season and moving down a division will help the development of the underclassmen. Could finish anywhere in the division.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Pat Grimes
Goals for/against: 38/18
Home field: Primary Center, Rock St., Hughestown
Players to watch: Seniors – Erin Donahue, MF; Crystal Price, MF; Juniors – Megan Armbruster, FB; Brittany Dunn, Marissa Duffy, FB; MF; Morgan Fereck, MF; Carlena Semenza, F; Sophomores – Jessica Norris, MF/FB; Brianna Purdy, MF/FB; Desiree Spindler, MF/FB
Outlook: The Patriots lost a couple key players to graduation, but have a talented group returning and should be a factor as they move up a division. The defense is solid, but the goalkeeping is untested. Pittston Area will likely be a contender for the title.
State classification: 3A
Coach: Tyler Dennis
Goals for/against: 41/30
Home field: High school
Players to watch: Mandy Askew, Hannah Kyle, Tori Martin, Maria Peralta.
Outlook: Delaware Valley is typical of many teams in the division. The Warriors have enough talent to make a run at the title, but then again they could finish near the bottom of the pack. That just the way it will be for most teams in this ultra-competitive division.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Tim Lavelle
Goals for/against: 53/20
Home field: old Wilkes-Barre Twp. H.S.
Players to watch:
Seniors – Brittany Malone, FB; Janine Noss, Swp.; Jessica Shaw, MF; Kaitlyn Swales, F; Junior – Gina Elmy, MF.
Outlook: GAR has a nice nucleus with Division C scoring champion Swales (22 g, 9 a) and fellow first-team all-stars Elmy and Noss. If the Grenadiers can fill in the voids, they could make a strong run at the division. Another of the wait-and-see teams in a division loaded with them.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Roberto Sosa
Goals for/against: 25/65
Home field: 10th St., Wyoming
Players to watch: Seniors – Kayleigh Dymond, K; Sarah McDermott, MF; Sarah Murphy, FB; Juniors – Lauren Brague, F; Marissa Coolbaugh, F; Jessica Murray, MF/F.
Outlook: This year’s Wyoming Area team is like those of the recent past. The Warriors have enough talent to improve on last year’s record and will pull off a few upsets. But the lack of depth will hurt in the long run.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Hosiah “Dave” Davis
Goals for/against: 29/35
Home field: Moscow Elem., Rte. 690
Players to watch: not available
Outlook: Information wasn’t supplied by the coaching staff, but the Trojans should have a decent amount of talent back to possibly break the .500 barrier.
Every team had a losing record in 2006, so like Division B there isn’t a real power among the seven teams.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Eric Eisele
Goals for/against: 22/33
Home field: Lakeside Elem.
Players to watch: Seniors – Morgan Firmstone, MF/F: Juniors – Kaitlyn Cottell, FB; Carly Gelatte, F; Kayla Hartley, MF/F; Grace Manzione, MF; Maureen Ordnung, MF/FB; Alana Propst, K.
Outlook: The Hornets have high expectations and for good reason. All-star and leading scorer Hartley (8 g, 2 a) leads an experienced group that should contend for the divisional title. The team was pretty solid last season even against the top teams in the division, all of which have moved up to Division B.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Brian Bannon
Goals for/against: 16/19
Home field: High school
Players to watch:
Seniors – Erin Keating, F; Samantha Mullery, FB; Juniors – Dana Abend, MF; Brittany Brown, FB; Lauren Rinehiemer, MF; Sophomores – Brenna Halesey, K.
Outlook: Hanover Area may have its best all-around team since the program started. Seven starters return, including several on a solid defense. If the Hawks can find some scoring punch, then they could make a run at the division title.
State classification: 3A
Coach: Andre Alvear
Goals for/against: 20/35
Home field: Football stadium
Players to watch: Seniors – Jen Bayzick, Swp.; Jennifer Drogalis, K; Alyssa Lucadamo, F; Katrina Wagner, FB; Toni White, MF; Juniors – Elena Calabrese, Stp.; Linda Martine, F; Sophomores — Samantha Lamoreaux, F; Lauren Williams, FB.
Outlook: The Cougars have made steady progress and could take the next step, posting a winning season. Eight starters return and there is a talented group of freshmen who can fill in the games. The defense played much better a year ago and now the offense needs to improve.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Chris Goetter
Goals for/against: 14/48
Home field: Gordon Avenue
Players to watch: Seniors – Jill Carlo, MF; Amy Falzone, FB.; Amber Giampietro, Sr.; Kirby Rinker, FB; Liz Wendolowski, FB;, F; Juniors – Erin Conrad, MF; Brittany Majikes.
Outlook: The Mohawks have a nice balance of experienced upperclassmen and talented sophomores and freshmen. However, it may take time for the team to get on the same page under its new coach. The Mohawks should be much better come mid-April than they are out of the gate.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Scott Benedict
Goals for/against: 7/37
Home field: Roslund Elem., Rte. 29
Players to watch: Amanda Barber, F; Laura DeSoo, F; Jamie Donahue, K; Angelica Evans, FB; Christine Leber, MF; Shauna McKenna, MF; Kriss Payton, F; Ashley Poindexter, FB; Vanessa Walker, MF; Junior – Kate Gibbons, MF.
Outlook: The new coaching staff plans on building the program steadily, stressing fundamentals, and that’s probably a good plan. The Tigers have struggled to score goals the past three seasons, putting too much pressure on the defense. A .500 season would be a nice accomplishment.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Mike Sowlinski
Goals for/against: 7/32
Home field: Jenkins Twp. Soccer Fields
Players to watch: Seniors – Sara Hunter, Swp.; Katie Kern, F; Jess Linskey, F; Jamie Powers, K.; Junior – Gia Scavo, F/MF; Sophomore – Katie Kugler, FB; Freshmen – Brittany Battista, FB; Katie Rooney, MF; Nicole Sowlinski, MF.
Outlook: The Eagles lost only two starters and should improve with the combination of returning players and newcomers. The key will be the seniors, who are expected to guide the underclassmen in the school’s final year. Seton should be able to get out of the basement.
State classification: 2A
Coach: Wayne McCormick
Goals for/against: 15/61
Home field: Luz. Co. Rec Complex
Players to watch: Seniors – Katie Goode, MF; Melissa Jankovich, FB; Katie Mandachi, FB; Juniors – Kim Kannick, F; Sophomore – Abby Zurad, MF.
Outlook: O’Reilly is keeping its goals modest for its final year. The Queenswomen would like to finish .500, a possibility if they aren’t hit with the injury bug. The roster consists of only 14 players, making anything more than a middle-of-the-pack finish seem unlikely.
