Historical Society lecture to examine how the vote was won for the women of Wexford

A.Davis28 min ago
Following a major movement, women finally obtained the right to vote back in 1918. It was largely thanks to the work of the suffragette movement, spearheaded by people like Emmeline Pankhurst in the UK.

Given the approach of the election, it's probably as good a time as any for Wexford Historical Society to look at the suffragette movement on a local level and that's exactly what they intend to do with a fascinating November lecture at Clayton Whites Hotel next Wednesday, November 13, at 8 p.m.

There, historian Dermot McCarthy will give a talk titled When Emmeline Pankhurst and James Connolly Visited – A History of the Suffragette Movement in County Wexford.

This illustrated lecture will outline in detail the background and magnitude of women seeking suffrage by organised protest in the fledgling years of the twentieth century and tell of this movement's relevance in a local, Wexford context.

It promises to be a fascinating evening and all are welcome to attend. For more details, follow Wexford Historical Society on social media.
