Holly Holtzen of Santa Rosa has been appointed administrator of the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday.

The home, established in 1884, is the largest of eight veterans homes in California, serving 876 military retirees and spouses on a 600-acre campus, according to the state Department of Veterans Affairs. It is open to veterans, including those who are disabled or homeless, who are 55 or older and have served on active duty.

Holtzen was state director of AARP from 2019 to 2024. She held several positions at the Ohio Housing Finance Agency from 2009 to 2019, including acting executive director from 2018 to 2019 and chief operating officer from 2017 to 2019.

She holds a PhD in health services research from Old Dominion University, a master's in public administration from Troy University, and a bachelor's in business administration from Saint Leo University.

Holtzen replaces Lisa Peake, who retired as the Veterans Home administrator in July after five years.
