Hottest Fourth of July ever in store for Phoenix?

N.Thompson1 days ago
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Fireworks exploding in the night-time sky won't be the only thing that's sizzling hot this Fourth of July.

With a forecast high of 115 degrees, we would break into the top three hottest Fourth of July holidays ever recorded in Phoenix.

A check of the records for the official gauge at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport reveals the all-time record of 118 degrees was set back on July 4, 1989. Then, 17 years ago we hit 116 degrees on that date to come in as second-hottest ever recorded.

Just last year, Phoenix hit 113 degrees, a record that was tied in 2003, 1973, 1965 and 1940.

Over the last 20-plus years, the Fourth of July has been very hot, with three years cracking the top four hottest recorded.

That includes the hottest Fourth of July over the past 17 years, which was 116 in 2007.

Wouldn't it be nice to be back in the year Arizona became a state — with a high of only 90 degrees! The most recent time it rained on the 4th was in 2012 when .14′′ of rain fell at the airport.

Don't forget — this heat is no joke. We have declared First Alert Weather days for this excessive heat from the 4th of July until next Tuesday. Highs are forecast between 113 and 116 degrees.

Please stay hydrated and safe when you are outdoors to celebrate Independence Day!
