Houston police officers shot and injured a man who was wielding a pistol in north Houston Thursday.

Police around 8:20 p.m. received calls for service of a suspicious man walking in and out of traffic with a handgun, Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz said.

The man walked away from officers after they approached him in the 2400 block of Cavalcade Street.

"As he walked towards the train tracks, he produced a weapon," Diaz said. "We are unsure at the moment whether he discharged it."

Four police officers fired several shots at the man and he ran through a wooded area near the train tracks. Police deployed helicopters searching for the man and he was later discovered with a single gunshot wound in his upper torso.

"Unfortunately when he was given commands, he produced a pistol and this is the outcome," Diaz said.

"We don't know what kind of circumstances he was in, why he had a pistol, why he produced it, if in fact he fired the firearm," he said. "So we're trying to mitigate all that and process it as our team gets there and today the callers did well because there's no telling what could have happened if he continued walking down the street with a pistol in his hand."

The man was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.
