How the Columbus Crew is helping a local middle school

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — The Columbus Crew is increasing access for future soccer champions through community efforts, and the squad is teaming up with a local non-profit to do just that.

Student Success Stories provides free products, food, and clothing to students in need. On Monday, the Crew visited Wedgewood Middle School, where they helped revamp the existing school store.

The difference? The store is now Crew-themed, designed to inspire students to engage in the world of soccer.

Proceeds from the school store will go toward Wedgewood Middle School's soccer team, providing players with free gear needed to participate.

"We want to give back and this is a project where we can help kids through resources like soccer equipment and educational resources just to give back a bit more for a tournament like this," Tom Purves, senior director of community engagement for Major League Soccer said.

The Crew also teamed up with Club America, which is carrying out a similar project in Mexico City. This comes ahead of the sixth annual Campeones Cup on Wednesday.
