Irish Weather: Temperatures to drop below freezing as frost and ice expected overnight

Most of the country can expect dry and clear conditions today, with weather gradually turning cold and wintry across the week, Met Éireann has forecast.

Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will impact many areas in the morning but will clear throughout the afternoon. Highest temperatures will be between 6 and 11 degrees.

The clear spells will continue overnight but it will be cold and frosty with the chance of some isolated showers in the north and east. The temperatures are expected to drop, bringing with it the chance of some icy patches. Lowest temperatures of -2 and +2 degrees are forecast.

Tuesday is set to be another dry day, with any mist and fog gradually clearing in the morning. There will be some scattered showers but mainly in the east and north of the country. Highest temperatures of between 4 and 9 degrees and lowest overnight temperatures of between -2 to +4 degrees.

A cloudy day but dry day is on the cards for Wednesday with some patchy rain or drizzle in coastal areas and highest temperatures of between 4 and 9 degrees and lowest temperatures of between -3 and +1 degrees.

It will be a cold, dry day with sunny spells on Thursday with temperatures only reaching between 3 and 6 degrees, Met Éireann said. There will be some scattered showers in the north and west in the afternoon that will spread south in the evening.

Thursday night will see widespread frost and some icy patches with temperatures of between -3 to 0 degrees forecast.

Friday, “the first day of meteorological Winter”, will see a mix of sunny spells and some showers. It will be a cold day with highest temperatures of between 3 and 6 degrees.
