James B. Cavanaugh, 93, of Lee Park, Hanover Township, formerly of Main
Street, Sugar Notch, died Wednesday at Hospice Community Care, Mercy Hospital,
Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
He is the last of a generation; last of 13 children of Michael and Helen
(Clark) Cavanaugh. He was born in Ashley on Feb. 3, 1908. He was a resident of
Sugar Notch most of his life. For the past four years, he resided at Lee Park
Towers, Hanover Township. He attended St. Leo’s School in Ashley. He was
employed by Huber Colliery and No. 9 Colliery, Sugar Notch, as a breaker boy
and coal miner. Lastly he was employed by Pennsylvania State Highway
Department, retiring in 1973.

He was a member of St. Charles Church in Sugar Notch. He was a former
charter member of the Holy Name Society, also a Boy Scout master for several
years of St. Charles Church, of Sugar Notch. He was a member of Sugar Notch
Conservation Club, Sugar Notch Fire Department, the United Mine Workers
District II and the Senior Citizens, of Hanover Township. He also was an avid
hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Frances Polakowski, of 48
years of marriage, who died March 14, 1985; sons, Robert C., who died Nov. 24,

Helen C. Cavanaugh, Florence Gallagher and Rita Yates; also preceded in death
by brothers, Michael, Edward, John, Leonard, Patrick, Gerald and Joseph.

Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Frank “Alice” Reilly, of Del Ray Beach,
Fla.; Mrs. John “Marie” Kuklewicz, of Sugar Notch; Mrs. Anthony “Jean”
Aigeldinger, of Hanover Township; Mrs. Hugh “Joan” Hudak, of Hanover
Township; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and
nephews and cousins.



The funeral will be held on Monday, with services at 9:30 a.m. from George
A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, Pa., with a Mass of
Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church in Sugar Notch. Interment
will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Sunday, 2
to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice
Community Care of Mercy Hospital, 25 Church St., Wilkes-Barre.
