SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Jason Chapdelaine of Springfield was arraigned on Friday in Hampden Superior Court with the murder of his girlfriend. He pleaded not guilty to the charges that were brought against him.

He's been indicted by a grand jury and his case has moved from the District Court to Superior Court where the case will be tried. Chapdelaine allegedly stabbed 48-year-old Eileen Monaghan of Chicopee to death.

He was found next to her this past April where police say they were both unconscious from stab wounds. While he appeared to be self-inflicted, hers appeared to be the cause of violence. Monaghan was the Executive Assistant to Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi.

Cocchi and many others from the Sheriff's Office were in the courtroom on Friday to show support for their colleague and her grieving family.

"This individual should never see the day again, just spend the rest of his life behind a cell door, to me that's justice," said Hampden County Sherriff Nick Cocchi. "But, I have every bit of confidence that justice will be delivered. It's gonna be a long process. I have every bit of confidence in our district attorney Gulluni and his very competent staff. They have assigned a tremendous ADA to this case. Justice will be served."

Cocchi continued saying that he hopes Monaghan's case encourages others who may be in a domestic violence situation to seek help and resources.

If you or someone you know is in need of help, the number for the domestic violence/sexual assault hotline is 1-800-799-7233. You can also seek help locally at the YWCA. More resources can be found at the District of Massachusetts Courts website .
