Jefferson County off to best start in years

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Jefferson County head football coach Toney Powell knew the dominance the Tigers once had he played against them when he was in high school.

It's no secret the program has struggled since winning a state title in 2011, but Powell, in his first season, has renewed energy back in Monticello. Jefferson is 3-1, that triples their win total over the past few seasons.

The buzz is back, and this team excited to bring winning football back on Friday nights.

"It feels good. It's the best night. The best feeling ever," said junior Georondre Pittman. "We're doing something new. We're on a new track. Trying to be better and make the playoff."

"I've never heard the teachers or the admins say so much about football until this year," laughed Powell. "It's just a testament to hard work and believing in what the coaches are telling you to do. The kids have really bought in. There's no question about it."

The Tigers look for another win Friday night, when they travel to Wewahitchka.
