Joplin’s North Heights eyes National Register Status

JOPLIN, Mo. — Parts of another Joplin neighborhood may be eligible for the National Register.

The Joplin Historic Preservation Commission hosted a public meeting Thursday night to discuss an architectural survey involving the North Heights neighborhood.

The survey would identify resources in the neighborhood by its history, culture, and architectural significance. Tonight's meeting, the first of what will be three, is a required public engagement in order to apply for funding for the survey. If funding is approved, the survey would be done in three phases over the next three years.

Some of the homes could then be eligible for historic preservation and National Register status.

"There are benefits to being on the national register such as having access to historical tax credits to help rehabilitate the property," said Thomas Walters, Joplin Community Development Planner.

If funding for the survey is approved, it would examine more than 650 homes and more than 300 outbuildings.
