Josh Brugger defeats college student for District 10 Ottawa County board seat

epublican Josh Brugger has won the Nov. 5 election for the District 10 Ottawa County Board of Commissioners seat. After the incumbent Ottawa County District 10 commissioner announced his retirement, two candidates faced off for the seat. Current District 10 Commissioner Roger Bergman announced he would not be running for reelection last year. Both the Democrats and Republicans had contested primary elections in August, with Josh Brugger winning the Republican primary and Oliver Shampine winning the Democratic primary. According to unofficial Ottawa County election results, Brugger received 10,672 votes (63.79%) while Shampine received 6,058 votes (36.21%). As of 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 12 of 12 precincts in the district were fully reporting results. All election results are unofficial until they are certified by the county Board of Canvassers. District 10 covers the cities of Grand Haven and Ferrysburg, along with most of Spring Lake Township. Brugger, a former Grand Haven city council member and licensed general contractor, won his primary by more than 2,800 votes. Brugger, 46, has a political science degree from Hope College and previously served as an AmeriCorps volunteer. He has also worked with Habitat for Humanity, Love INC and the Salvation Army. Shampine, a current Grand Valley State University student, beat his Democratic opponent in August 588 votes to 497 votes.
