Journalism faces a huge challenge [letter]
Since attending the special Oct. 23 screening of "Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink" at The Ware Center, I feel compelled to write a note of thanks and a somber appeal to all those who choose to defile our democracy and threaten to take us down the path of fascism through their anticipatory obedience.
I believe it aptly describes the Republican Party members who have supported the lies and the authoritarian goals of Donald Trump.
I was grateful to have the opportunity to attend showing of the documentary, which was done in partnership with the Steinman Institute for Civic Engagement. And to listen to the thought-provoking conversations before and after the screening.
Although I am saddened by the changes to our beloved newspaper, I have a better understanding of the reasons that have precipitated these changes.
I thank all the reporters, editors and LNP | LancasterOnline staff for their efforts to give us broad information, especially during these past eight years, when one of our political parties, many of our institutions and some of the people of our country have succumbed to the lies and propaganda of one man.
When I learned that The Washington Post and the Los Angeles have refused to endorse a candidate in our presidential race in 2024, I began to realize the manner in which institutions have begun to begin to show signs of anticipatory obedience.
We must cast our vote for the person we believe to be the best leader to support our Constitution and the freedom of the press. The threat is real.
