Kamala Harris Teases Major Executive Action If Elected
Vice President Kamala Harris announced Friday that her first executive action, if elected president, would be to eliminate college degree requirements for certain federal positions, aiming to broaden job opportunities for Americans without four-year degrees.
Speaking at an IBEW local union hall in Janesville, Wisconsin, Harris stated she would "challenge the private sector to do the same," highlighting her commitment to workforce inclusivity.
"The press is always asking me, 'What are you going to do on day one?' One of the things I'm doing on day one — because I can do it by executive order — is I will eliminate unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs," Harris said. "And then I will challenge the private sector to do the same."
Harris emphasized her "opportunity economy" platform, prioritizing a package of bills aimed at lowering the cost of living through housing, child care, and grocery cost reductions. Despite efforts to distinguish her agenda from President Biden's, Harris has faced voter questions about how her administration would differ.
With voters increasingly focused on issues like inflation and the economy, Harris's proposal to expand federal job eligibility is intended to resonate with Americans who feel left out of traditional degree-based hiring practices.
