KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX) - A Kentucky man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy in Scott County was sentenced Tuesday for a separate crime he committed in Fort Mitchell.

A Kenton County Circuit Court Judge gave Steven Sheangshang a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to burglary and being a persistent felony offender, according to the Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.

FOX19 NOW previously reported that Sheangshang was caught on video stealing a portable generator from a home on Fortside Drive on May 17, 2023.

At the time, investigators did not know who the burglar was on the video.

A few days after the burglary, Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 outside Lexington, Kentucky, on May 22, 2023.

Sheangshang was identified as the suspect, the Fayette County Detention Center previously reported.

Law enforcement says Sheangshang later drove off, shot another man and stole his vehicle.

He was arrested in Lexington, and his photo spread across the Internet.

"Mr. Sheangshang's photograph started hitting the media in connection with the Scott County shooting," Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders told FOX19 NOW in May. "We realized that he also matched the video of the burglar in Fort Mitchell."

During the interview with Sanders, he told FOX19 NOW that it was not entirely known why Sheangshang was in Northern Kentucky in the first place.

Sanders explained what he saw on the security video:

  • A person pulling into the driveway of the Fort Mitchell home on May 17, 2023
  • The person then walked into the garage and came back out with a generator
  • The Commonwealth's Attorney added that an investigation later revealed Sheangshang pawned the generator right after he stole it.

Court records indicate that Sheangshang has a laundry list of criminal charges throughout the state.
