'Know Your Rights': Legal Fair Covers Immigration, Housing, Family Law Legal Services of Long Island and CARECEN will host a Legal Resource Fair in Brentwood, with presentations in English and Spanish.

BRENTWOOD, NY — Two legal organizations are hosting a legal resource fair to share information about immigration, housing, and family law.

Legal Services of Long Island and CARECEN, the largest immigration legal services provider on Long Island, are hosting their annual Legal Resource Fair on Tuesday, Oct.22, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Brentwood Public Library.

This event will feature three different "Know Your Rights" presentations, in English and Spanish. In addition, fact sheets will be provided in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole.

At 5:30 p.m., Nassau Suffolk Law Services will present Know Your Rights: Common Tenant Problems. The organization will discuss tenants' rights in relation to late rent and the eviction process, what to do when a landlord is illegally evicting you (such as turning off the heat), and other residential tenant rights.

At 6:15 p.m., CARECEN will present Know Your Rights: Immigration Related Issues about immigration benefits and the newly released immigration policies. In addition, CARECEN will review the procedure for applying for public benefits, including SNAP.

At 7 p.m., Nassau Suffolk Law Services will present Know Your Rights: Family Law Related Issues and. Presenters will discuss issues related to domestic violence and intimate partner violence including what rights victims have, how to seek orders of protection, and how to seek safety and services for you or someone you know.

Additionally, there will be a separate space where Long Island non-profit or other organizations specializing in immigration, public benefits, housing, domestic violence, and other areas will also be sharing information with the community.

For community members seeking an attorney consultation, attorneys and space will be available for private consultations on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Legal Services of Long Island, formerly known as Nassau Suffolk Law Services, helps people in need assert and secure their rights under the law. It provides free legal services in thousands of civil (non-criminal) cases each year and legal support to community advocates to ensure that people with low incomes and disabilities have equal access to the civil justice system on Long Island. Our staff includes attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and support staff. It focuses on cases dealing with the survival needs of people with low incomes involving shelter, food, healthcare, and family issues.

CARECEN is the largest immigration legal services provider on Long Island and provides free and low-cost legal representation on a variety of cases to the island's diverse immigrant communities.

The fair will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brentwood Public Library.
