Letter to the editor: Irony of Veterans Day
I wanted to go to the Veterans Day remembrance ceremony. I really did. But I just couldn't. The irony is too painful.
Those guys who rest beneath the white crosses on Normandy, my father's buddies, they died fighting fascism.
And now, the American electorate has just voted to return a fascist to the White House. It seems that those who gave their lives fighting fascism died in vain.
There are no words of apology adequate to those fallen, for the desecration of their sacrifice.
It is said that those who cannot learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it. It is easy to allow a dictator to seize power. History teaches that getting rid of a dictator (Germany, Italy) generally involves the deaths of a lot of innocent people.
