Limited Edition Ice Cream Benefits Sick Children Through We Cancerve Movement

Historic Harford County Farm Broom's Bloom Dairy , a landmark in Churchville known for its old-fashioned hand-dipped ice cream, has created a limited-edition key lime pie ice cream available through Sept. 30 to support the nonprofit.

A portion of each key lime pie flavored ice cream unit sold will directly benefit the We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

We Cancerve Founder Grace Callwood, 19, was diagnosed in 2011 at age seven with a rare form of stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma – lymphoblastic lymphoma – shortly after starting first grade. Her cancer ribbon's color is lime green. She was declared cured in 2019. Within weeks of diagnosis, she discovered opportunities to bring happiness to other children in sad situations and sparked a movement in 2012 that has inspired more than 30,000 people – mostly children – from throughout the country to harness youth ingenuity and service for meaningful change.

At age 11, she created the Sinai fund to cover meals for parents spending the day at the hospital with their child, and transportation for children and parents considering cancelling their appointments when they cannot afford a ride – two realities she saw frequently while undergoing chemotherapy treatment from 2011 to 2014. To date, the We Cancerve Pediatric Patient Assistance Fund has covered 805 hospital cafeteria vouchers, 900 grocery gift cards, 300 prescription co-pays for medications, 245 ride share services such as Lyft and Uber, 500 parking passes and covered household bills for 77 different families.

"It is truly an honor to have a flavor dedicated to We Cancerve and to help raise awareness of pediatric cancer. Spreading the word about a critical illness through the comfort of a sweet treat is a great way to connect the entire family to a cause that means so much to so many children," said Callwood, a Howard University sophomore from Abingdon. "This ice cream flavor is more than just a sweet treat – it's a symbol of courage, hope and resilience. It represents the strength of our young volunteers and the spirit of the amazing kids we fight for every day. I'm so honored to have their dedication recognized in such a delicious way."
