Kraft-ing a new record: Lowville looking to reclaim largest cheesecake crown

LOWVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – Kraft Heinz is for the right recipe to reclaim the crown for the world's largest cheesecake.

The Lowville-based plant began work on Friday in constructing a record-setting cheesecake. Workers are hoping to reclaim the Guinness World Record for the largest dessert this weekend.

Kraft going to for largest cheesecake record in Lowville this weekend

Kraft Heinz previously held the distinction in 2013 with a 6,900-pound cheesecake. However, a plant in Russia broke the mark in 2017 with a nearly 10,000-pound entry.

"As the leader in Philly Cream Cheese, we wanted to reclaim the record because it's important to us as a brand that we are able to hold the Guinness World Record for the world's largest cheesecake," said Chris Pomerville, who is the plant's Manufacturing Manager. "With an event like the Cream Cheese Festival in our backyard, what better what to do that."

A lot of work is going into Lowville trying to bring the record home to the United States. There are a number of ingredients that will go into this potentially record-setting attempt.

Here's a breakdown of what's going into this cheesecake:

  • Goal weight: ~15,000 lbs, equivalent to 10 dairy cows

  • Pan: outside diameter of 11ft., 6in. and an inside diameter of 10ft., 10in.

  • Filling: ~13,500 lbs of Philadelphia's Ready to Eat Cheesecake

  • Crust: over 870 lbs of graham cracker crumbs and over 330 lbs of sugar

  • It's not just the ingredients that builders had to think about when creating the plans for the cheesecake.

"The whole process is around six months at least with designing who big the pan needs to be and the volume of the pan based on the density," said Derrick Langdon, who serves as the plant's Quality Manager Taste for Meals and Snacking. "We want to make sure we have a large enough pan because the worst thing you can do is to get it all done and find out you're short."

Guinness World Records Adjudicator Michael Empric is overseeing the process to make sure all the rules are followed in the record-breaking process. Empric is no stranger to the Cream Cheese Festival, as he oversaw the previous record-breaking at the festival in 2013.

"I actually was here in 2013 for the last attempt that happened here," Empric said. "This is fun record because it's so applicable to the community with Cream Cheese Festival being a huge draw and hopefully it will set a new Guinness World Record."

The reveal will be at noon tomorrow to coincide with the all-day event starting at 11 a.m.

Following the unveiling, Lieutenant Colonel Adam. Keller, Commander, 6-6 Air Cavalry Squadron, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division will cut the Philadelphia Cheesecake and slices will be handed out to fans.

Festival attendees can take cheesecake home with them with the remainder being donated to the Lowville Food Pantry and Watertown Urban Mission , so others can enjoy this potentially sweet victory.
