Longtime Hoboken Barber Shop Closes, Barbers Move Another old-fashioned Hoboken barbershop has closed, but the barbers moved around the corner. See how it looked 50 years ago.HOBOKEN, NJ — Several of Hoboken's old-fashioned barber shops have closed over the last few years, with barbers retiring or passing away. But sometimes a new generation takes over.
Last week, the tiny First Street Barber Shop , located four blocks from the Hoboken Train Terminal, closed. The homey spot at 55 First St. had displayed an old-fashioned barber pole, with frequent holiday and Sinatra decor in the window.
Almost fifty years ago, the spot was called "J. Carulli's Sanitary Barber Shop," as this black and white photo shows .
Last year, the owner of First Street Barber Shop — which had taken that name in the 1990s — retired, according to a spokesperson for Salon Z, around the corner.
"Before retiring, the owner teamed up with Salon Z to carry the torch," said the spokesperson. "After about a year and a half when the lease was up, Salon Z Moved the shop around the corner to their 80 Hudson St. location, where they constructed a separate barber room, decor and name intact."
Now, the barbers of First Street Barber Shop can be found closer to the train station inside Studio Z Salon.
"We are looking forward to serving all our amazing clients in our new location," they said.

They're not the only longtime barber shop on First Street that closed recently. Four years ago, in October of 2021, the barber at Gino's Barber Shop, further west on First Street, hung up his shears after 59 years. READ MORE: Barber Hangs Up His Shears In Hoboken
