LONGVIEW, Texas ( KETK ) — City officials said Longview has improved its littering problem.

According to 2024 survey results, the citywide litter index score was 1.7, a significant improvement to last year's score 2.69. This year marks the 13th annual litter survey that evaluates 60 sites across Longview.

"The survey, conducted across six sections of the city, involved 10 sites in each section. Five participants at each location graded the amount of visual litter on a 1 to 4 scale, with 1 representing minimal litter and 4 indicating heavy litter and/or illegal dumping. The survey findings provide a detailed snapshot of the cleanliness of our community," city officials said.

Officials thank Keep Longview Beautiful's "Less Littered Longview" campaign launched in May that raises awareness to the city's rising liter index since COVID. Through public education, more clean-up events and working with local organizations, officials said the campaign has been instrumental in addressing the issue.

"These results are encouraging," said Zach Korthals, the Executive Director of Keep Longview Beautiful. "We're seeing less visible litter than we have in years, and it shows that the community is responding to our initiatives."
