Lubbock ISD Addresses Bad Budget by Potentially Pairing Campuses

L.Thompson56 min ago

In a recent committee meeting hosted by the Lubbock Independent School District, discussions were made with regard to whether or not consolidation of elementary school campuses would be a good idea.

The meeting was made up of over 100 attendees of parents, teachers, and local leaders. The district indicated that the purpose of including so many was to incorporate community involvement in their decision making.

Why Would LISD Consolidate Their Campuses?

It turns out that schools are expensive! Not just that, but Everything Lubbock stated that the district is currently operating under a near-15-million-dollar budget deficit. Add the fact that there is no new state funding and enrollment rates are in a decline, and the district is working on ways to keep things afloat.

Everything Lubbock also included remarks made by Superintendent Dr. Kathy Rollo who reassured parents that nothing is final, but that her main concern is keeping the existing school programs in place above all else.

What do Parents Think of LISD's Decision?

It's important to note that nothing has been set in stone, and the district has not finalized anything with regard to consolidating, shrinking, or pairing school campuses.

But, from what the discussed at the meeting, some parents were... less than supportive of the potential change.

One concerned citizen, Casey Garcia , quickly took to Facebook to inform the public of what she calls poor choices resulting from the district's "incompetence".

The potential plans show what schools are "on the chopping block" and what campuses would be paired with others, such as Brown with Roscoe Wilson and Harwell to Ervin.

The district is asking for community feedback until they ultimately make the final decision on November 21st.

So, what do you think? Is this a good option for cutting down on spending and improving enrollment in LISD? Or is this a bad idea that poses more problems than it solves?
