Mac Jones after Jaguars’ 46-point loss: ‘It wasn’t our day today’

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones had maybe the understatement of the season in the NFL on Sunday.

"It wasn't our day today," Jones said after the Jaguars lost to the Detroit Lions 52-6.

The Lions scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions, then kicked a field goal and ran out the final 6:45 on the clock to complete their rout.

Detroit's offense set a franchise record by gaining 645 yards while Jacksonville managed to pick up 170. The Lions went 6-of-10 on third down and 3-of-3 on fourth down.

"In the NFL, you never know what the weekend's going to bring you," Jones said , "but you want to just try to be in it at the end, and, obviously, we weren't this week, so it stinks. Just got to keep working and come together. Like I said, it wasn't our day today. Just try to get it to where we're competing in the fourth quarter, and you do that by just doing your job each play and not focusing too much on external factors."

Jones completed 17-of-29 passes for 138 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and ran for 7 yards on two carries.

The former Alabama All-American and New England Patriots quarterback made his second straight start on Sunday in place of Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars lost to the Minnesota Vikings 12-7 last week.

A left shoulder injury has sidelined Lawrence.

"We'll see how he does during this week of the bye," Pederson said about Lawrence's status. "See where he's at. I'm not going to commit right now, obviously. We've still got a ways away. We'll see how he does this week. We got time, so we'll figure that out."

But Pederson might not have time.

While Detroit improved to 9-1 on Sunday, Jacksonville dropped to 2-9, and pregame reports indicated Pederson's job security was shaky as the Jaguars enter their bye week. Jacksonville's next game is on Dec. 1 against the Houston Texans.

"Listen, I've been around this league a long time," Pederson said . "If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. But at the same time, I still have a job to do, and that's to get ready for a good division opponent in two weeks."

Jones offered a testimonial for the coach after Sunday's game.

"Coach Pederson's awesome," Jones said . "He's a great coach. Obviously, it's not going our way right now, but he's definitely a great leader of men. We're going to keep working and figure it out. I think the bye week is a good opportunity to do that."
