‘Mascot’ for Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria releases new book in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — As Wooster Street patrons picked up some of the world's most famous pizza; they could also grab Frank Pepe's unofficial mascot's latest publication.

And of course pet the 14-year-old rescue pup who connected a new family.

"I've always said good people have a way of finding each other and I think that's why Linda has become a part of our extended family here at Frank Pepe's," said Frank Pepe's Pizzeria Napoletana Kevin Gagliard.

Champ is also the unofficial therapy dog at Frank Pepe's, pulling to the restaurant during his multiple daily walks there.

"Just to pet him and have that moment and get away from the hustle and bustle," said Gina Merola, "Mama Gina," who is featured in the book.

"It's mainly him soothing others," said Champ's mom and New Haven Author Linda Barone. "People really come out and say I really need to see Champ; I'm having a bad day."

To Mom, Linda Barone, the hound mix is a champion of unconditional love even during difficult times. In their new book Champ Moves to Little Italy and Discover Pepes, the two navigate through the pandemic while still finding ways to make connections.

"It was difficult, but he really eased that," said Barone. "He kind of was the savior for people."

"You'd sit outside and he'd make your day because you literally weren't conversing with people," said Merola.

Saturday's book signing made Covid seem like a distant memory full of smiles, hugs and lots of pets!

"It's such an honor for her to include me in it, I feel like wow. I love them," Merola said.

"Out of something pretty awful like Covid, something good can come out and he brings out the best in everybody," Barone said.

Barone rescued Champ, after years of abuse, when he was seven. Now they are inseparable. Their bond can be seen during their six walks a day, averaging around eight miles, but also has permanence through the written word. The senior dog's first book, Champ Goes to Daycare, was written in 2022 and is about overcoming separation anxiety.
