Mayor Adams, City Hall Reacts To Trump Victory
NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Eric Adams along with other city officials delivered remarks on Wednesday following the results of the 2024 presidential election.
At a press briefing at City Hall, Adams congratulated President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.
"I want to say to New Yorkers, the votes have been counted, and we have elected a new president, President Trump,"Adams said.
Adams and city officials said they have been preparing for a number of different outcomes.
"Our team will work with the incoming administration for the good of all New Yorkers."
Adams said he would defend the city's values and will stand up for the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities.
"We intend to protect our immigrant communities — and we will work with the new administration and Congress to develop a holistic and compassionate national strategy for our immigration system," he added.
When asked by reporters, officials could not give specifics on what City Hall could do to protect immigrants from mass deportations — something Trump has previously said he would do.
The city will continue to offer abortion access, including for individuals coming from out of state. In addition, gender-affirming care will continue to be offered, officials said.
In preparation of a possible Trump win, city officials analyzed the 2016 election and looked at potential funding and policy risks.
Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer brought up federal funding, the city has $5 billion in federal grants, which makes up about 7 percent of the city's budget.
After multiple inquiries from reporters, Adams said he has not called Trump to congratulate him yet, but "intends to do so." Adding, he wants to keep a line of communication with the White House.
